General Security Tips

 

Place emergency numbers near phones.
If you live alone, don't advertise that on mailbox or phone directory.
Don't open doors to, or admit, strangers.
Do a security survey of your home.
Install deadbolt locks if you don't have them.
Install an alarm for additional security.
Trim shrubs and trees near windows.
Keep most cash in the bank, not in the house.
Lock outside power and fuse boxes.
Leave some lights on in the house at night.
Keep a list of serial numbers for valuable items.
Keep the list in a safe place.
Consider a safe for secure storage of valuables, papers and weapons.
Record credit card numbers and phone numbers to report theft.
Join a neighborhood watch program.
Let neighbors know if you will be gone on a trip.
Stop deliveries before travel.
Watch for strangers in neighborhood, get license numbers, description.
Don't leave children unattended.
Mark major appliances with SSN, drivers license or phone number.
Never leave house keys with valet parking.
Don't leave spare keys outside, if necessary give one to a neighbor.
Consider high security locks.
Avoid displaying valuables to strangers.
Don't give unsolicited callers on phone personal information.
Don't give unsolicited callers on phone credit card info.
Never leave a message on answering machine that you are out of town.
Always ensure auto security and remove keys, even in garage.
